How can I connect an external hard drive to my network when using a new iMac?

iMac 27" 5K, macOS 10.14

it depend on what you mean really


an external hd which is directly connected to a LAN network is called a NAS(network attached storage)

how one set it up would usually be an app from the NAS manufacturer one install and use from ones computer


an external hd which is connected to ones computer and one wish to share on the network while ones computer is running

works in the same manner as all other shared folders/volumes on the computer
