Has anyone else cancelled apple music and had all the downloaded songs from apple music disappear?

If you did not purchase tracks, then they will disappear when you cancel your subscription.

I had the membership for whatever the monthly fee was from Apple. Did I need to still buy the tracks?

Only if you want to keep them permanently. You do not need to pay for them just to continue listening to them.
