Safari Bookmarks Do Not Sync

I'm running Mac OSX 10.14.5 on an iMac 27", late 2012 model. For the life of me, I can't sync my Safari bookmarks on my iMac with either my iPhone or iPad, both of which are running the latest iOS operating system. I've tried the suggestions made by Apple and other websites, but nothing works. I can edit the bookmarks in Safari, (ver 12.1.1) but they don't transfer to my other devices. I'm logged into iCloud on all devices, and I'm pretty sure I have all the settings correct that should allow syncing to occur. What am I missing?

Thanks,

Ed

Success at last!!!! After my last reply I was repeating the steps I had tried previously, without any changes. I then exported all my bookmarks and saved them to my desktop, just to keep a copy. I then in Safari deleted a number of bookmarks that I no longer use. Some of these were imported from IE, Chrome or Firefox etc and were not needed. I only kept those bookmarks that I use regularly and were bookmarked in Safari. I exported the revised list of bookmarks to my desktop as well. I quit Safari, and turned off syncing in System Preferences>iCloud>Safari and closed System Preferences and waited a couple or minutes. Went back to System Preferernces>iCloud>Safari and checked Safari. I got the message about merging my bookmarks and clicked ok. I had to repeat this one more time to keep Safari checked. I quit System Preferences waited a few minutes and launched Safari. After a few minutes, I noticed the newly "revised and much shorter" bookmarks list on my iPhone matched what I have in iMac. I must have had a bad bookmark screwing things up. I also have the same bookmark list now on my iPad as well. All is well now and I'm much happier.

Again, thanks for the advice. I hope this might help others who might experience this problem. You were a great help Eric.

You are welcome. I don't think you are missing something using iCloud. Are you running any anti-virus programs? If so, quit them and see if that helps. Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Quit/reopen Safari and test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

If the Bookmarks still don't sync, try booting into the Safe Mode to see if they will sync.

Safe Mode - About

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply.        Pastebin

Something to try. If the Bookmarks are syncing between the iPhone and the iPad, the computer is the problem.

Try going to System Preferences/iCloud and stop Safari syncing by unchecking the box. Wait a couple of minutes, then check syncing. Allow time for the sync to complete.

Last resort  - have you tried signing out of iCloud and then sign back in?

You are welcome. You can't see the Bookmarks in iCloud. It may not help, but try running/posting the Etrecheck report in your normal account. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply.        Pastebin

Thanks for the reply, Eric.

I did what you suggested, but it didn't resolve the issue. I had previously tried signing out of iCloud and have signed back in again. Both my iPhone and iPad have the same set of bookmarks, but not the same book marks seen in Safari on my iMac. I have no indication if the bookmarks are syncing or not. When I uncheck Safari in System Preferences>iCloud and then recheck I get a message asking if I want to merge my bookmarks and reading list with iCloud. I then click ok. I have to repeat this a second time for the Safari checkmark to stay. That's seems strange to me. It doesn't help though. I think I'm missing something pretty basic to using iCloud, and I can't figure out what it might be. Thanks again.

Again, thanks for the help. I turned off my anti virus software and this didn't help I next checked the extensions in Safari and I had not installed any extensions. I was about to boot up in safe mode. I then turned off the syncing in System Peferences and turned it back on again. I then signed out of iCloud and signed back in again, all the safe mode, an still no syncing of bookmarks. Since none of these tips helped, I didn't got to trying Etrecheck. I might just have to live with this as is. I can figure out no way to actually determine if bookmarks are actually sent to iCloud. Where can you check? I don't see anything like bookmarks on iCloud drive. It seems like bookmarks are not being updated in iCloud and my devices keep syncing on an old bookmark file. Very strange....

Thanks for the help. You gave me a systematic approach to the problem, unfortunately I can't get syncing to work.
