android youtube cast to youtube app via airplay on appletv 4k

I don't know if this is more a question for Apple or Google.

My set up:

I recently purchased an AppleTV 4K to replace a Roku4 in my living room.

I have the AppleTV connected to a LG 4K smart TV.

I have the youtube app installed on both the AppleTV as well as the TV itself.

My AppleTV Airplay settings :

AirPlay : On

Allow Access: Everyone

the Youtube app on the AppleTV has an option to link via WIFI or with TV code. I have tried both.

I can only cast from my android phone to the AppleTV if Youtube is "running" and in the foreground.

My experience on my other platforms - Roku and LG WebOS - is that regardless of if the Youtube App is "running", I can choose it as a cast target and it will open the video.

Casting to the AppleTV only works if I manually select the YouTube app on the AppleTV ...
