MacBook Air not receiving verification code

Instagram has to send me a verification code. I don't have access to my iPhone, but my number is set up on my Mac. It's receiving texts from other people, including numbers I don't have saved. I've had friends try requesting verification codes on their own phones, which worked. So I know it has nothing to do with Instagram's servers. I first requested the code about 20 hours ago, so I don't think waiting it out will work.

”Texts” fall into two very distinct classes:

iMessages, sent to/from other Apple devices. Your Mac has no problem independently sending and receiving these.
SMS text messages, sent between cellular telephones. This is what you’re hoping to receive from Instagram. But the only way you can get this on your Mac is to have your iPhone in the process. How to forward text messages on your iPhone - Apple Support
