Constant Buffering

I am having a terrible time with buffering. It is not connected to any program on my computer that I can tell. It will just start buffering in the middle of something and go on and on. Sometime I have to just get up and go in the other room and check back later. For Example, when I decided to post this question because I wasn't finding any answer anywhere else, when this page opened up, it buffered for a full 5+ minutes before I was able to even post my question. I have plenty of memory, in fact 449.7 of 499.25 available. I know it isn't my wifi because my daughter has her computer right across the room from me and has no trouble at all. I hope someone can help me.

When you do, please do make a note of the exact model, tech specs, and MacOS and include that with any questions. It wastes both your and our time to keep asking for details which still have not been posted.

Having said that, good luck with the new one!

Please post an EtreCheck report of your system and we can look for any obvious issues. Please click the link, watch the slideshow to learn how to use the tool and download and run the free version of the app and then post the complete report it produces as your reply to this message.

When you have run the report and are ready to reply to this message please attach the report. You will see a screen shot below that indicates where to click in your reply message.

You do not need to start a new question. All you need to do is run the report and save it. Next, do the following:

These instructions are extremely simple.

I have copied the report, but cannot seem to figure out how to post it on here. I tried the whole thing, but it won't let me send it because it has over 5000 characters. I am such an idiot when it comes to this computer. Any suggestions. I did copy the report and made it a pdf, but can't find a place to attach it to this message board.

No, it wasn't necessary to start a new topic - first, you did not attach the report there either and second, you can just reply to a post here and then attach it. Look at rkaufmann's post and his arrow points to the third icon from the right in the little toolbar in the reply window. Copy the report, then click on that icon and insert the report.

I just looked at your other post and you now had a report, but it was not decipherable. The formatting is not legible. please try again here, the moderators will be removing your other thread.

Okay. When I select the third icon from the right I get a window that says Additional Text. It asks me to add text and then says I need to add a title. Then I go to the body and paste the report. The report appears on the screen, but then, obviously, nothing happens on your end.

Without the report, it is really almost impossible to help, but two things:

Apparently you do not have enough RAM - you only have 4 GB and that is one major reason for your problem.

Also, in one of your posts, you quoted part of the report and it mentioned that you have adware - that would be another major reason for your problem.

And, finally, you kept saying "buffering" - that is an expression usually used when you are trying to watch streaming video and the connection isn't fast enough to keep up with the video, so it keeps "stuttering" until it catches up. Is that what you are referring to or is it that you keep getting a little rotating wheel while trying to do anything. That can be helped with more RAM.

So, in order to provide meaningful advice, we still need to see the entire report.

I get the rotating wheel all the time, no matter what I am doing.

The Major issues EtreCheck found are No Time Machine Backup and Adware detected.

The Minor issues are This machine is running short of RAM and has a mechanical hard drive, reducing the speed of the virtual memory system.

Also have had numerous app crashes, Orphan files that could be removed, unsigned software files installed that should be reviewed. It sayd this machine may be considered vintage and will not work after macOS 10.14 "Mojave".

Download Malwarebytes for Mac to get rid of the adware.

If your model allows user access, then you may want to add more RAM (if it is upgradeable) and a slow spinning drive will always be slow. So, I don't think I'd invest money in an old machine, but start saving for a newer model. We still don't know what year yours is - without that info, we can only guess. Don't buy another one with the slow spinning 5400 rpm drive.
