Faulty Storage Almost Full Warning

I have 9 gb of data avail on my iPhone and keep getting a red alert notice on my settings tab that my storage is almost full and, of course, prompting me to buy storage. Is there any way to shut this notification off or decrease the GB level to an amount where storage might actually be low?

iPhone 7, iOS 12

If you are seeing a storage full warning and prompting you to make a purchase, then that is iCloud storage, not the actual phone storage. You cannot purchase phone storage. Go to Settings><yourname>iCloud, and see how much storage you have and have used.
