Java update malware.

I am getting conflicting opinions about the recurring Java Update popup. Some say it is legitimate. Others say that if I click update then I will be installing malware on my computer. If it is a legitimate update, why would it be a popup and not a normal update app store update? It really seems like a scam to me. Do I need Java? From what I have read, updating Java is a risk. But not updating it is also a risk. Installing a new version is also a risk because it leaves the old version on the computer, which leaves it vulnerable to attack.

I Got the Update Prompt & I’m Good:

I got the prompt for Java. I created a Time Machine Backup prior to installing it. Once installed, I ran MalwareBytes, with no malware found.

If malware had been found I would have just restored from the Time Machine Backup.
