Apple Watch 4 and iPhone requirements

Hello, my question relates to the Apple Watch 4 and what you can do without an iPhone. This may not be popular considering the forum, but I've never owned an iPhone and have no intention of owning one. I have an iPad Air that I enjoy, but that's the only Apple product I've ever owned. However, the Apple Watch 4 has a very specific feature I'm after: the EKG. In addition to that, I'd like to use it as a general fitness tracker. Is having an iPhone required, or pretty much required, for having an Apple Watch 4 and using it for these purposes?

Hi jlcoving,

Thanks for reaching out. To answer your question simply, you cannot use an Apple Watch or even set it up without an iPhone. Your Apple Watch logs information to your iPhone, and there's an app on the iPhone that manages the Apple Watch.

Yes, an iPhone is absolutely required to set up and use the watch.

Well, that is unfortunate. I guess I will have to wait for a different product from elsewhere that supports the EKG function. I appreciate the replies guys.
