Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter does not work after iOS 12.4 update

After updating my iPhone to iOS 12.4, my Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter is not working as previously. I use the adapter with an external portable USB DAC (AudioQuest DragonFly Cobalt) to play music files through headphones. This specific Apple adapter is recommended by AudioQuest for this purpose ("best sound quality"), and the adapter previously worked fine.

At the exact moment I updated my iPhone to iOS 12.4, the adapter stopped working properly. Now when I start to play a file, the adapter seems to be attempting (but failing) to draw power from the iPhone for the DAC.  A music file starts to play, but then stops playing.  Sometimes play will resume through the built-in iPhone speaker (but not through the DAC).  If I connect a power source to the adapter's lightning port, the adapter will usually (but not always) allow files to play through the DAC (that is, it works after a fashion).

Importantly, other adapters/hardware configurations continue to work fine - Other lightning to USB adapters with my iPhone -- the older Apple lightning to USB 2 adapter (no simultaneous charging), third-party lightning to USB adapters, and using the DAC with a USB C adapter connected to my iPad (also iOS 12.4).  Thus it appears to be a specific problem with the newest Apple lightning to USB adapter in this use case.

I have tried restarting my iPhone, various plugging/unplugging scenarios, and I have the latest drivers on both the adapter and the DAC. Any recommendations appreciated; it would help to know if others have experienced similar. I am contacting AudioQuest separately. Although I don't think the problem is with their hardware, it is conceivable that a DAC firmware revision would allow it to play better with the iOS 12.4/adapter configuration.

OK I finally isolated the problem to the 1/4” to 3.5 mm adapter I was using on one of my headphone cables. Swapping out this cable-adapter combo for a set of cables with a built-in 3.5 mm plug worked, and simply leaving the 1/4” to 3.5 mm adapter plugged in to the AQ DragonFly (no headphones attached) reproduced the issue - wow.

Hi abiding_dude!

I understand that your accessory is not woking with your iPhone using a Lightning to USB adapter, and I'm happy to help. To isolate this issue further, you can try some further general troubleshooting steps. Please back up your iPhone before proceeding:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Once you have backed up, you can reinstall the iOS software using this link:

If you can’t update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the issue is still present, try restoring the iPhone to factory settings and setting it up as a new iPhone:

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

If this issue is present after restoring to factory settings, you can contact Apple Support using this link:

The exact thing happened to me. As soon as 12.4 was released, my Audioquest Dragonfly Black no longer functions with my iPad Mini 5 & the Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter. At all. No matter which order I connect devices/cables, the Dragonfly indicator light is red(standby mode). I’m doing whatever I can to investigate and search for a solution, but I have a feeling the solution will have to come in an update from Apple, and in that case, I don’t feel very hopeful. :(

It just occurred to me the problem could be based partly on the load being driven. I am not having a problem here with my Shure IEMs or my Sennheiser headphones, but I haven’t yet gone back and tried the original headphones I was using when I updated the iOS on my iPhone - it will be about 10 days before I can try those headphones with my setup again

Got you. I appreciate you communicating with me about this, even after the problem was solved for you. Definitely becoming more uncommon, these days!

Here’s a tidbit - upon inspecting my adapter and its box, I found that the eBay seller I bought it from is running a bait & switch, where he is listing the part as Brand New, Genuine Apple OEM, but sending buyers a Chinese knockoff! 🤬 I sent him a, “strongly worded email”, to which he simply replied, “sorry for any inconvenience”, and refunded me on the spot.. 🙄 I wasn’t about to pay Apple $40 for an ounce of plastic and a few connectors, so I grabbed one for $28 sold directly by Amazon. Should be here tomorrow, so we’ll see. 🤞🏻
