I am searching a large word list in a pdf file using PREVIEW and wish to add parameters to the search to reduce hits.
What are commands for searching in preview? The only ones I know are search for the entire word, beginng of a word or the end of the word. Are there more commands that would be useful for doing searches on lists of words? Specifiying the number of letters in a word would be golden.

Apple's Preview search of PDF is restricted to using quotes to differentiate leading, trailing, or combined white-space around a word, or a phrase search. Use no quotes when searching for occurrences of a single word. That is it for Preview.
Adobe Acrobat Reader DC offers an Advanced Search that offers still limited, but additional search controls:
In either case, you are not using a word processing application on a word processing document, or regular expressions to further fine tune the PDF search process. If you want to do that, then extract the text from the PDF into a text document and use BBEdit or some other tool that gives you advanced tools for the search purpose.
