Steps if water damage

I dropped my phone in the hot tub. I quickly grabbed it. Took it out of the case, turned it off and put it in a bowl of rice. It has been in the bowl of rice for 13 hours. I have the Iphone XS. What else should I be doing? I am reading contradictory statements that it is and is not waterproof. I read in one place that it is for up to 30 minutes in 2 meters which my phone was no where near that deep and I would say in the water for 5 seconds. Please advise.

Thank you,

iPhone XS

It is water resistant, not waterproof. The 2 meter, 30 minute language is in reference to laboratory certification testing under controlled condition. It has nothing to do with real world performance.

The whole rice thing is a myth. It may actually do more harm than good. If the device actually suffered liquid damage, a desiccant like silica gel may help dry it out enough to be able to power it on and back it up, but that's about it.

The people who claimed they were helped by rice, weren't... what actually help in their cases was time... leaving it alone and powered off long enough for liquid to evaporate naturally.

Fire it up. See if it works. If it does, then don't worry about it. If it doesn't, make an appointment at the genius bar and have it checked. They will explain your options.

Depends on whether or not there’s damage. Sometimes the seals hold back the water. Did you try turning it on? Also, do you have a good backup?

Rice doesn’t do anything, and many find that wet rice gets stuck in crevices.

I’d say bring it in to Apple for evaluation. It may not be damaged. If it is, then you would need to decide if you need to get a replacement device from Apple or if you need a data recovery service. Anything done for data recovery is considered unauthorized by Apple and typically results in Apple denying repair/replacement services.
