MacBook Air won't install OS

My daughter let her MacBook Air run out of power. Once she plugged it in, she got a message saying the OS couldn't be installed. We have restarted the computer but that didn't help. What can we do?

I would try macOS Recovery. You launch into it and reinstall the OS over the old one.
