Repairing iPad Broken Screen

I’ve cracked the screen of my iPad 6th gen. None of the internal components were damaged, just the exterior glass of the screen. Apple seem to only quote for repairing the whole iPad, which is not necassary in this case (the aluminium backing is still in pristine condition). Is there any way that only the glass screen can be repaired, for a lower price?

Not by Apple.

Apple does not repair iPads. They offer in/out-of-warranty replacements.

An out-of-warranty replacement is going to cost 60% of that iPad’s original price.

It is what it is.

If you use a third party, non-Apple authorised electronics repair center to get work done to this iPad, you can say bye-bye to and future help and support for that iPad from Apple.

If this iPad is opened/fixed by an unauthorised electronics repair center, Apple will never help you with that iPad ever, again.

Apple no longer will assume any respinsibikity for that iPad.

If you had purchased two-year, extended AppleCare+, at time of purchase or within 60 days of purchase, a replacement iPad for that damaged screen iPad would only have cost you a small replacement fee of $49 U.S.D..

No one that comes into these communities wants to pay extra for Apple's two-year, extended AppleCare+ warranty plan when purchasing an expensive iPad, but when it gets severely damage within that timeframe, users come here complaining about the expensive costs of repair/replacement.

The extra AppleCare+ coverage with the additonal small replacement fee is much cheaper than the potential of an early, out-of-warranty expensive iDevice repair.

Apple iDevices are not considered inexpensive to everyone, so in my mind, your want the protection of the extended warranty in case something bad happens to these devices to protect from an even more expensive repair cost.

My wife hates paying for expensive electronics, but still wants another new 9.7 inch or larger screen and larger storage iPad when her iPad 3 eventually fails or we cannot get another replacement iPad when the battery dies.

Apple products ain’t that cheap.

Users drop or get cracked screens with their iPads and come here about the damage all the time in these communities.

Obviously, the OP here can't afford to get this fix/replaced by Apple and can't afford to purchase another brand new iPad of the same model or newer from Apple to replace the severely damaged one.

These types of users take the risk NOT paying for the extra Apple warranty ( which has warranties that the free, one-year plan doesn’t cover ) and moan amd groan when something happens to the device within that time frame and maybe forced to pay for an expensive repair from Apple.

Apple devices are expensive to fix out of warranty. Period.

Why take the risk if it can be avoided for two years by purchasing warranty insurance?

I've done the math. It's typically a third the price of many of the devices I've purchased. I've personally never had an Apple product fail in the AppleCare period (outside of the warranty) and one case of accidental damage. And there's an additional charge for repair after accidental damage. I'm really only worried about breakage, and I'll get a case to protect against that.

However, it's my style to be critical of anyone for not purchasing AppleCare+. They made their choice, and hopefully we can provide answers that aren't judgmental.

You are still saving approx. 1/3 of the repair/replacement costs by getting the extended AppleCare+

I paid $299 my my iPad Mini 4. AppleCare+ was $99. If it broke within 2 years I would have paid $99 for AppleCare+ and $49 for the replacement fee. That's half the cost.

But it's an individual choice. It's a combination extended warranty and insurance plan with deductible. Obviously such a plan exists because it makes money for the seller. Nothing wrong with that, but I believe I've made a sound decision by not purchasing AppleCare+.

Is there a way? Yes, but that would basically mean that Apple or an AASP will no longer provide any hardware service, including battery replacement service.

The iPad is a particularly nasty device to replace the screen assembly as everything is glued in place. The aftermarket places that claim to do it often butcher the work, but not all.

When my iPad Mini 2 suffered a cracked screen, I went out and got a new one on sale because the price was nearly Apple’s repair price. Their repair price for my iPad Mini 4 is the same as the price I paid.

Most people don't get it. It's a fairly inexpensive device, and for many the numbers don't necessarily work out. It's basically an insurance plan, and most insurance plans are offered because it makes money for the insurer. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm not going to fault anyone for not insuring a small device like an iPad.

I went out and plunked $40 on an Otterbox Defender. My iPad Mini 4 has been through multiple drops and other than ordinary wear is in great condition. There's a line of dead pixels on the screen and I've scratched up the area around the Lightning port, but other than that it's pristine.
