I currently subscribe to Apple Music. My wife shared her Apple Music account with me so I will cancel my membership. Do I need to cancel mine before I start with hers and what are the steps to do so.

You should be fine canceling your and then signing into her family plan Apple Music. If she did not set up Family Plan the it may not work correctly.
