Contacts missing in Phone app but showing in Messages

Hello,

My contacts are wonky... some of my contacts were no longer visible in the Phone app (or Contacts app). However, I can search for the same contact in Messages and find their full contact info...name, picture, phone numbers, email address, etc.

I've tried all the basic techniques to recover the contacts (e.g. removing/re-adding from iCloud), to no avail. Any idea what is happening here?
