Possible to have a ssd installed in mbp ?

Is it possible to have an ssd installed in my mbp ? If so would it void the warranty ? And if not how do I do it ? Thanks in advance

Not a 2018. That’s permanently fixed to the logic board. I’m pretty sure that even a transplant of an equivalent part wouldn’t work as the SSD controller wouldn’t know what to do with IT.

Sounds like you saw an external drive of some kind. If you just need room for files, external SSDs are extremely fast these days.

It might be a little more complicated than “void your warranty” with regards to applicable law. There is a law in the US that states that a manufacturer’s warranty or extended warranty can’t be voided simply on the basis of user modification. Any denial of warranty claims would need to be related to accidental damage, improper function, or damage from installation. But after the warranty is another matter. No manufacturer is required to provide service after the warranty is up. California has a law that requires that a manufacturer keep repair parts in stock for at least 7 years after the last production of a product over $100 wholesale and with a manufacturer's warranty. However, I don’t think they’re required to service a device if it doesn’t meet their guidelines (i.e. no unauthorized DIY parts).

That being said, MacBook Pro models in recent years have implemented soldered ICs on the logic board as both main memory and the SSD, with no expansion slots. Some of the previous models have various slots although Apple implemented its own protocols. There are a couple of sellers of compatible SSDs cards for those models.

Which model do you have?

MacBook Pros have shipped with SSD's only SSDs sine 2013. You already have one that is likely faster than most aftermarket drives.

The last MBPs that have slotted (replaceable) drives were made in 2015. What you have is your "forever" SSD.

I’ve seen evidence of a slot in a 2016 model. Beetstech has an article on the various form factors that Apple has used. They say the last ones with slots were mid-2017 MBP/MBA models.
