iPhone is waterproof or is it water resistance?

You can meet a lot of discussions about the water resistance of the iPhone or if it is water resistant. Some say that the iPhone is waterproof, others say it is water resistance ... How is it finally? What is the difference?

All iPhone models are NOT water proof but is water resistant (especially the newer model). Water proof implies that it can work while or after being submerged in water for a short or prolonged period of time). Stupid me mistook the web search results of it being "water resistant" as "water proof", and as a result my iPhone Xs Max (after being submerged in water for less than 2 minute) is now dead and non-functional and is being used as a paper weight. "Water resistant" implies that minor sweatings and/or light rain exposure will not damage the iPhone. Anytime it's submerged then it will be water damaged. This kinda makes sense since water can leak into the speaker area, or the SIM tray release pin hole on the side, and the charger port at bottom of iPhone. The Apple Watch on the other hand is water resistant. I was able to swim for a prolonged period of time and it (Watch Series 3) still works.
