Payment verification failed

I’m just trying to update a free app I have because I can’t use it until it updates. But the credit card I had on file is no longer active so it won’t let me update or download anything until it gets a working card. But I read that you can just delete the card information from the Apple ID and it would resume working until a purchase was made. But it still doesn’t work. Do I really have to get a new card?

If you can’t download or update any apps, including free apps, and you see a message about billing or payment, learn what to do.
