Boot Camp - Stuck when partitioning

Hi all,

I got an iMac 27'' Retina 5k (late 2014) and want to install Windows 10 using Boot Camp.

My iMac meets the system requirements and completes the download of the Windows support file successfully, but after I sized the the Windows 10 partition and click 'Install' the completion bar indication goes immediately to full and gets stuck there.

I'm running on macOS Mojave 10.14.6

Never done this before so any help is appreciated...

Cheers

Run BC Assistant, remove the current partition, and ensure that your APFS disk has the full disk space back. Disconnect all external peripherals, run a SMC and NVRAM Reset and re-run BCA. Do not connect any external storage, unless BCA prompts you for it, then you can use a USB2 Flash drive of 16+ GB.

I do not have a 10.14.6 on a 2014 iMac to validate. If you can fall back to 10.14.5, it may be a bit better.

You have an APFS Fusion drive, which is made up of the SSD+HDD. DU is showing the SSD only, but it is fine.

  • Remove the FAT partition using DU
  • Disconnect all external peripherals (except Keyboard and Mouse).
  • Reset SMC and NVRAM
  • Run BCA and check if you can install Windows. You may need to use an older W10 ISO, instead of the currently available one.

Let us bypass BC Assistant.

  • Create a USB2 Flash drive installer using the Create+Download options in BC Assistant. Do not use USB3.
  • Create a FAT partition of the size you want Windows to be.
  • Disconnect all external storage except Keyboard/Mouse/Trackpad, and reset SMC and NVRAM.
  • Connect the USB2 Installer, reboot and hold Alt/Option.
  • Your iMac supports BIOS and UEFI, so we can try to use EFI first and address any issues, and fallback to BIOS as a last resort.

Hi Loner,

I'm having one more go with the normal BCA and if that doesn't work then look your option.

There's a patch for Mojave 10.14.6 "Download macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Combo Update", it addresses the following issue amongst others also concerning bootcamp

  • Addresses an issue which prevents creation of a new Boot Camp partition on iMac and Mac mini with Fusion Drive

Keep fingers crossed and I keep you posted.

Cheers

See Macs with Fusion drive: How to find BOOTCAMP partition in Windows installer - Apple Support for reference. Was a scroll bar on the right side of the partition selection pane available?

Remove the current partition using BCA, re-run BCA, take a photo of the partition screen in BCA, and a photo of the partition selection screen in the Windows installer and then we can check what is not working correctly.

Hi Loner,

Still doesn't work even with the updates of Mojave I installed. Interesting enough, I did a 'distil list' after BCA finished the partition and before I entered my credentials to proceed. The output clearly shows the BCA created the partition as the partition got the 'bootcamp' name with it (see below). But after I terminated again because I could see the partition in the windows installer I did another 'distil list' and the 'bootcamp' name was gone (see other image below. Somewhere in between the restart of the Mac and the Windows installer setup this name disappeared. I'll give it a rest for a while before I do anything else.... Maybe even wait for macOS Catalina...?

The name is not critical to Windows installation. It is more an identifier for the user to use when selecting the partition. When the partition is reformatted from FAT32 (BOOTCAMP) to NTFS (no name),

Can you clarify - could you or could you not see the partition?

Did the size discrepancy that you saw earlier get corrected with the 10.14.6 patch? macOS Catalina may bring new issues. 😉. Carpe Diem!

On my 2014 iMac, I refuse to run anything after Sierra. The APFS fusion construct is too primitive and immature for my liking.

Hi Loner,

Yes, downloaded the boot camp update 10.14.5 before, however I already had Mojave .6 and it came up with this when I tried to install it;

I also did the FAT partition, which was successful, see below. I saved the transcript the partitioning process if you need them...

what I found really weird though is that if I look in 'About my Mac/Storage' it says Fusion drive (as below), but in the disk utility when I partitioned, it says 'Apple SSD SD)128F Media'. I'm confused now as of the type of HD, SSD or Fusion?
