Boot Camp - Stuck when partitioning

Hi all,

I got an iMac 27'' Retina 5k (late 2014) and want to install Windows 10 using Boot Camp.

My iMac meets the system requirements and completes the download of the Windows support file successfully, but after I sized the the Windows 10 partition and click 'Install' the completion bar indication goes immediately to full and gets stuck there.

I'm running on macOS Mojave 10.14.6

Never done this before so any help is appreciated...

Cheers

Run BC Assistant, remove the current partition, and ensure that your APFS disk has the full disk space back. Disconnect all external peripherals, run a SMC and NVRAM Reset and re-run BCA. Do not connect any external storage, unless BCA prompts you for it, then you can use a USB2 Flash drive of 16+ GB.

I do not have a 10.14.6 on a 2014 iMac to validate. If you can fall back to 10.14.5, it may be a bit better.

Hi Loner,

Had little progress, it seems that it created the W10 partition, however, when I was prompted where to install Windows, the selection screen was not identical to the screenshot in the Help files. The selection prompt window should show the partition with 'bootcamp' (see screenshot from help), but on my selection prompt window the 'bootcamp' partition was not on list so I terminated it. Not sure where to take it from there.... Do it again?

This is what I got, I assume it was the correct partition, but it didn't had 'bootcamp' with it so i didn't dare to format the drive

disk utility shows that the partition was created by bootcamp as it wasn't there before

Hi Loner,

with three entries you mean incl. the Windows partition?

The size was actually also one of the reason I terminated. I did the procedure a second time using the same size, I set 300 GB with the same end result, but the end sizes in the windows prompt and DU were different. The first time the windows prompt showed for Partition3 355GB and in the DU 382 GB and the second time it was 388 GB at the windows prompt and 422 GB.

Hi Loner,

Just tried it a third time with following settings;

  • BCA W10 partition size set to: 216 GB
  • Ran Install
  • BCA created partition (was a lot quicker than the two prior attempts, approx. 5 min whereas the other two were about 60 min)
  • Mac rebooted, started install process (language settings etc.)
  • After I selected the W10 version (W10 Home) the setup asked me on which partition
  • BCA partition still not on the list, and that Partition3 size was Total/Free 314.9 GB
  • I terminated the process
  • Checked DU and partition size created by BCA was 338.12 GB

All these sizes are nowhere near of my initial setting of 216 GB.

It seems that the Window installer can't see the partition or the partition wasn't created properly by BCA?

Cheers

Hi Loner,

did the following;

  • removed the BCA partition

  • Started BCA with following settings

  • Partition was created in 75seconds
  • I entered my passwords for BCA to make changes and BCA helper
  • Mac restarted and I went through the initial Windows 10 settings as below;

  • Again, not bootcamp partition visible. There was also no scroll bar on the right. I clicked around on the right a few times, but there wasn't one...
  • After terminating again, the Mac showed the following

Hi Loner,

The name is not critical to Windows installation. It is more an identifier for the user to use when selecting the partition. When the partition is reformatted from FAT32 (BOOTCAMP) to NTFS (no name

    • I just found it strange that it is gone as I thought that Windows/bootcamp installer may use it as a partition identifier and is also usually visible in the windows partition list...

because I could see the partition in the windows installer

    • sorry was in a rush when writing it, should say couldn't :)

Size discrepancy wasn't fixed either. Every time I attempted BCA I entered a different size and it never matched or came close the size I entered, the actual size was always significantly greater. The last attempt I selected 240 GB and as you can see, the partition ended up about 380GB so almost 140 GB more than I selected.

I'm actually real happy with Mojave, I feel like the apps and other programs are executed smoother and faster than with Sierra and other than with BCA I had no issues for what I'm using the Mac for. considering it's now 5 years old.

Either way, I thought the same way with Catalina that there may be other problems, but hoping that BCA is not one of them..;)

I don't have the time the next couple of weeks to do any more on this or make another attempt with BCA, but may have another go then. Appreciate your help Loner, I learned a lot about the Mac since I converted from Windows 4 years ago..;)

Would it be OK to keep this thread open and get back to it when I make another attempt? They may even release another patch, well, at least hope they will....:)

Thanks Loner, much appreciated your help throughout this journey...;

Just thinking of opening another discussion as the title of this one is that bootcamp is stuck, which it isn't anymore, but Windows installer can't find the bootcamp partition. It got somewhat lost in this thread and maybe someone else out there has now a similar issue. What you think?
