Is my iPhone carrier unlocked

Hello,

I went through my carriers steps to unlock my iphone. Steps are as follows.

  • backup your iPhone
  • erase your iPhone
  • restore your iPhone.

According to their instructions this is all I have to do to unlock my iPhone. However, this is AT&T. I’m not convinced. I’m leaving for a month long trip in Europe and will need to have the ability to use local carrier sim cards. No way I’m leaving the states without tangible evidence supporting the claim that my phone is unlocked. Assurances from AT&T are not enough.

Some instructions I found on the web said that if you can see the “carrier options” menu under cellular in settings, it’s a sign your phone is unlocked. I couldn’t find “carrier options” in my settings.

Is there a way to identify if my iPhone is carrier unlocked? Are do I just throw the dice, go to Europe and hope for the best?

I have been with AT&T for 11 years (and 6 iPhones through AT&T, most recent iPhone XS was through Apple though) and they do not automatically unlock a device just because you’ve paid it off. You must use their web form to request an unlock - https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/

Once you get an email that it’s done (or check again later online - it usually is less than a single business day), you would restore it as a new device in iTunes. At the end of the restore you will see a message in iTunes confirming that the device was unlocked. If you don’t see the confirmation message in iTunes, it’s not unlocked.
