bootcamp does not recognise win10 64 (again)

Just trying to install WIn10 x64 on Macbook Air - fully updated iOS and latest Win10 d/l from microsoft site (ie as of Aug 2019), and the ages old error of bootcamp not recognising the Win10 x64 ISO is back.

Any ideas as to how this can be resolved, or any news as to when iOS will be patched to fix this error?

Thanks

MacBook Air

From Install Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp Assistant - Apple Support,

This is an oblique reference to a direct download, and the link will open a Safari window to download the ISO.

There is a better reference in Install Windows on your newer Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support, which says

  • A Windows ISO image (a disk image that contains the entire contents of a DVD) downloaded from Microsoft, or both a Windows full-install installation disc (not the upgrade version of Windows) and a built-in disc drive or compatible external optical drive.
  • To download Windows ISO images, see Microsoft Windows Software Download.

Thanks Loner T. File is windows.iso and was obtained following MS advice that the “best way would be using Windows 10 installer file:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Then it will download and check the file integrity and if there is any problem, then it will notify you.”

I downloaded on a win machine to ISO, selecting Win10 / US / x64 options but also tried a variety of options including UK english, x32 (checking files were confused), etc.

None worked before I came to report it here.

will check md5 hash using certutil and will revert (though if it is really checked by the MS downloader this seems superfluous).

Hi Loner T, Yes I had read that in these discussions somewhere else. Files were downloaded over ethernet/fibre connections and transferred from PC to mac using pen-drives. The details of my file are:

Windows 10 US-ENG x64 (downloaded this week) - 4.42 GB (4,752,932,864 bytes)

certutil -hashfile I:windows.iso

SHA1 hash of I:windows.iso:

028dbebff6beab2ccc4a426cd6b452e44682aee2

CertUtil: -hashfile command completed successfully.

I can provide the hash of the other files I downloaded (eg UK english version).

For this file (being so large), I had format pen drive exFAT as classic FAT would not accept it). No issues noted when transferring from PC/pendrive/Mac

Thanks for your input

Another version I had attempted with was

Windows 10 x64 (also downloaded on 2 Aug) 3.88 GB (4,169,596,928 bytes)

certutil -hashfile I:windows.iso

SHA1 hash of I:windows.iso:

2de3c74022496a6b3263e7a5c296900b2c69b2ba

CertUtil: -hashfile command completed successfully.

To check whether there was some issue with the latest version of Win10 available for download, I tried with this verison

Windows 10 Pro x64 downloaded in Feb 2019 3.86 GB (4,147,445,760 bytes)

certutil -hashfile I:windows.iso

SHA1 hash of I:windows.iso:

98346e87fd969b3b76203d88230552b6d54a3429

CertUtil: -hashfile command completed successfully.

The ISO file name does not seem to be a retail version. Here are some examples.

openssl md5 *.iso

MD5(Win10_1803_English_x64.iso)= 986e2e17cf6b0b49141cd15699768e6e

MD5(Win10_1809Oct_English_x64.iso)= 7a19f70f948614b55b716a6ee0ca5274

MD5(Win10_1809Oct_Spanish_x64.iso)= 8cf07112c189819e26a50b0c675fe603

MD5(Win10_1809Oct_v2_English_x64.iso)= ab22088758dbc5a13247ffc64c36f9a8

Hi Loner T

Users downloading from MS site do not have an option as to which file name to select.

The download tool from MS -which must be installed on a windows os - is found here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 always names the file windows.iso.

The step by step process is shown in a word file here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lyv0jPWapjyg80Zt5feHiZHrxmVMwalm/view?usp=sharing

Maybe Apple needs the iOS to recognize retail versions provided by MS as shown above and not just specific filenames?

As an update, when downloading the Win10 file directly onto the Mac (ie safari on mac) the file names in the format you show above are generated.

Having done so (over wifi), the mac is now happily installing Win10 Pro, so the issue I have has been resolved.

The following work around has been identified, until such time that Apple updates the bootcamp installer and the support pages on this:

When installing Win10 via bootcamp on a Mac, the Win10 iso should be downloaded directly onto the mac that will have the Win10 installation on. Downloading on a PC using MS tool and transferring it physically to the mac is not compatible with bootcamp installation.

Hope others find this solution works for them too.

Loner T - thanks for the questions/guidance.
