I think I messed up. A while ago I signed out of my iCloud account and now my Photos area is pretty much empty-had about 19,000 photos.
Would appreciate any idea of where they may be on my computer, and how to get them back into Photos.

Did you have the iCloud Photos Library enabled? If so how long ago did you sign out of iCloud? If it's been less that 30 days sign back in and see if you an download the iCloud Photos Library to your Photos library again.
