Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls - Continued.

Ouch. I was hoping for a silent fix. Apple hasn't acknowledged anything about this, and it's not high enough on the media's radar to force Jobs to say anything about it tomorrow.

I can not test reliably, but I think the hysteresis behaviour has been changed. It now takes slightly longer to turn off/on when I block/unblock the proximity sensor. How did you test this?

Sorry it took me a second to reply Jaxon, I had to quickly look up your other posts to see if your snide remark was habitual or just coincidental (*end sarcasm). Turns out you love to take jabs at people.

They have still not even acknowledged the proximity problem. If they don't do that tomorrow I am returning the useless phone on monday. I've endured 3 weeks with this phone not working correctly (now on my second phone) when they should have acknowledged the problem on day 5. This kind of terrible support is beyond unacceptable, especially from Apple. "Let's see if they can tidy up the rest". They haven't tidied anything yet, just added a taller 1 bar, give me a break....(*roll eyes)

It does exactly what the press release said it would do. Change the bar formula and also the look of the bars slightly.

Sadly at first I thought you were right. I called my friends phone and it was working for the first 2 minutes. I was very very excited!!! I even put the phone between my shoulder and ear, still working!!

Alas, it was just a dream. Shortly thereafter I was back to the usual firework show. If I move the phone .25 inches away from my ear it lights up like a Christmas tree. Then it no longer worked on my shoulder either. I didn't do any definitive testing, just normal use.

1)Let the sensor shut off
2) Hold it close to your face 2-3 minutes
3) move it ever so slightly away .25" - .5" and BLAMO!!! facedialing

I have the same issue as others and am left handed and do get dropped calls and have experienced some proximity issues.

I roll my eyes at the level of nonsense and spew. It's an issue, Apple is now beginning to address it/them (release 4.01 which did the first step as promised) and now I will see if the response tomorrow is fair and acceptable. May well be, may not be...

So one more time for you... (Rolls Eyes, and Gives Apple Credit for step 1 as promised 4.01 and fixing the bar formula)

How Many Times I have told you NOTHING can be fixed with any update. I tried on one phone 4.0.1. , We also tested 4.1 Beta and it does not in any way fixing any of the issues. It is a hardware problem and phones MUST be and will be slowly exchanged .
This will not happened earlier than the Month from now.

Please read all my posts here and you will see everything said becomes the reality now.

I'd don't think anyone on this post is getting over excited or caught up in the issue. Some of us actually care to have a working phone, not just another Apple product. We all want to see results before our 30 day return window expires. Jumping from iPhone to Droid is a HUGE decision and it's one a lot of us are now faced with.

But I'm sure you are right. Jobs will do a dance for us tomorrow. When he's done he will say, "I'm so sorry for all of the trouble you guys have been having...my bad! To make it up to you we are providing a brand new iPhone for everyone! Hooray!! We still can't figure out a way to fix the proximity sensor glitch, so we are also giving away a free jawbone bluetooth to anyone who still wants to try and keep it. Oh and free bumpers for everyone!" *(rolls eyes, end sarcasm)

I'd bet you the cost of my phone that they don't even ADDRESS the proximity sensor issue tomorrow. It will be a big announcement that the white iphone is coming out and sales have been through the roof despite a "few antenna issues".

In all honesty Jaxon, I hope you are right. We'll see tomorrow...

I get the antenna/signal issue. I don't get the proximity sensor issue. Sure, if I take the iPhone an inch and a half awat from my ear, the screen comes on, but if I put ut back to my face the screen goes black. Try as I might, I'm unable to replicate the issue with dropping calls or interfering with the phone with my cheek/ear. I've tied dialing my home phone and then leaving it off the hook/connected and playing around with both my hand (obscuring the sensor and watching it go black etc.) and with it up tp my ear (right handed).

So.... Is this just an issue that affects some people due to overly sensetive hardware and variations in the sensor hardware accross batches, or is this deffinately an issue ALL iPhones suffer from?

The signal/antenna issue I see as a non-issue. Much media hype and bandwagon jumping going on. But I can see the sensor issue is a possible serious concern. I'm just asking and trying to replicate and identify the issue, and in the UK, I'm still in my 14 return period with O2.

I have two iPhones 4 with the same proximity sensor issue, this is driving me crazy! I can't have a conversation for more than 3 min because I either end the call, mute it, or start pressing numbers...

Any thoughts about iOS 4.0.1 fixing this?

I have an IPhone 4 and until today haven't been concerned about the problems. It turns out, except for the reception concerns, I have all of them. If Steve doesn't outline a fix tomorrow the phone will be returned. I'm tired of apologizing to the people I talk to when the phone hangs up, mutes them, or sounds numbers in their ears when I'm trying to have a conversation. I appreciapte all the informative posts in this forum, which will save me the time and hassle of dealing with Apple or AT&T on the problem. If I return the phone, I'll get another one after the bugs have been worked out. This is my first Iphone, and I love the features, but need to be able to make a reliable phone call.

So what is going to happen tomorrow at the press conference is Stevie going to give away free pencil colors to Coat the antenna ?

No it doesn't fix 'it'.
It does exactly what it says on the tin. It changes the way in which it displays signal strength.

I'm just curious to find out how many people actually experience the sensor issue, aS I can't yet replicate it.

If it only manifests itself on some iPhones, it's a hardware fault in my book. If it can be replicated on any handset, it's a design fault or a software fault. At the moment I cannot replicate this.

Well I just updated my software to 4.0.1 and I am sorry to say the software did not fix the issue.

Right after updating the software I received a call and started talking and typing on my PC keyboard. A few moments later I hung up on the party using my cheek.

If Apple does not address this issue tomorrow then I will be returning my iPhone 4 and going with a android powered phone.

Forgive my simplicity with this question, but the iphone has always had a proximity issue, hasn't it? At least, it has for me on both my original iphone and 3g. I would constantly mute calls when holding either phone to my face. I've gotten around that by training myself to press the home button after placing a call to turn off the screen. I haven't had any issues since adding this step.

I'm waiting on my new iphone to be delivered... does the home button fix the issue on the new phone?
