Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls - Continued.

This thread is a continuation of Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls which was getting too long and causing some browsers to time out. The old thread has been locked and the last post links to this thread.

Thank you.

Official Apple statement here. At the bottom they make the statement about the return policy.

I suggest you print the open letter before they delete that "thread" as well. Lol.

Im returning mine Friday.
BUt I do have a question. My receipt from Apple says return date of July 17th which is only 14 days from when I bought it...what happened to 30 days?

Based on what others have said on this board, you will have 30 days to return the phone to Apple for a refund and will not have to pay a restocking fee (regardless of what it says on the receipt.)

Here's a curious little thought... the first half of this thread, discussing a problem with the iPhone, was locked at 116 pages, 1689 replies because it was becoming too long and locking browsers. I can understand that completely, however how come the July 14th shipping date thread at 163 pages and 2400 replies is still going?

Just found that curious.

Edit: Never mind, it has now been locked too.

I thought it was 116 pages yesterday, but now it is only 113 pages! What happened to the extra pages?

probably a little "editing" of the locked thread. all I can do is laugh about it at this point.

My experience with the Genius Bar:

Just got back from the apple store after making a genius appointment for a problem with my proximity sensor. Here is what happened.

Got there 15 minutes early and was told to wait which I was happy to do. While waiting I checked this thread to see if there was any new news on the issue. When the Genius appointment started, this thread was sitting in front of me on a 27" iMac.

The tech asked me what he could do to help me, and I told him that he could fix the proximity sensor in my phone. He smiled, looked at the screen behind me, and asked me for my phone. He showed me where the proximity sensor was located, held the phone up to his ear while making a call, and started to tell me that I needed to hold the phone in a position where the sensor would remain functional. I must have had a look of astonishment, bewiderment, or just plain "you gotta be kidding me" on my face because he couldn't even finish the sentence. He said he would be right back and started to walk to the back. I stopped him and asked him if this was a software issue. *HE SAID NO, IT WAS A HARDWARE ISSUE*. I asked him if this was going to be fixed by a software update. *HE SAID NO.* He said he was going to the back to try and get me a phone that worked better. He returned 5 minutes later with a new iphone that was already activated. As he handed it to me, I asked him if this phone had any hardware or software that was different from the one I had. *HE SAID NO.* I asked him if this phone was going to have the same problems with the proximity sensor as the one I just returned. He said, “probably.”

I asked him if he had seen this thread. He said he had, and that he had seen all of the threads. I asked him if this was the first time he had seen this problem. He almost laughed as he said, “ummmmmm – no.”

I applaud the honesty of this employee. I hope he does not get in trouble for admitting what we all seem to know and what they refuse to officially acknowledge. They exchanged my phone without question, without me asking for it and without hesitation. This, more than anything, tells me they know they have a problem.

For those who think a silent recall is ongoing, my new iPhone looks just like my old one. The color is the same, the sensor appears to be the same.

What follows is the best part, or worst part, of the story. As I was walking to my car, I called my wife, who cannot figure out why I am still trying with the iPhone 4, to tell her I got a new phone. 35 seconds into the call, she ended up on speakerphone.

I cannot believe that Apple hasn’t officially said anything on this.

I just want to reply to say that I am also experiencing this problem. I keep activating the speakerphone when I have the phone up to my ear, it is very annoying to have to keep turning it off.
I love my iPhone4, I would hate to get rid of it because of this. I just hope Apple will release a new update soon to resolve all of our issues.

The Proximity Sensor problem is a definite deal breaker for me. It not only infuriates me, but anyone I'm on the phone with. I have neither the time nor desire to put up with a lousy product, especially one that is so costly. Unless a fix or recall is issued soon, I will return the phone and get a Droid.

Sorry, but I had to laugh at that one.

Even though I think this is mostly hardware issues, I'm holding out for the software update to see if it fixes the problems. Next Friday (7/23)is D day, if it's not working then it's going back for a refund. Back to my 3gs, that has never failed me. Then, on to look for something else. The Captivate looks very interesting.

Why does big media only seem to care about the "patchable" antenna problem? Why in the world did Apple change the function of the power button when you're on a call? The is absolutely no point to that adjustment other than to make this issue intolerable while we wait for a fix. I'm sorry but putting a picture on the screen while talking just isn't cutting it for me... The bright light of the screen so close to the corner of my eye has got to be causing me some kind of retina damage! The beautiful screen is pointless my vision goes bad ...Forget setting up an appointment with the genius bar, I'm scheduling one with an Optomtriest and then possibly an injury lawyer.

Apple needs to face this head on or they will have a Windows Vista type experience. My wife is unhappy with her iPhone 4, the proximity sensor issue is causing her all kinds of headaches. You don't blame the consumer for problems that were not properly flushed out in QA. Apple should be working hard on an appropriate response that makes them look like they care, otherwise they may take a big hit from this experience. I'm already liking some of the Android phones I'm seeing and how Apple reacts to this will affect my future cell phone purchasing decisions.
