I got a replacement from Apple and it still has the issue, when I updated to 4.01 the issue went away... Yesterday the proximity issue reared it's ugly head again and the issue is as bad, if not worse, than my original phone.

I don't know a lot about electronics, but it does seem to be a software issue... Why else would it go away with an update/restore and then start up again later? Though I'm not discounting a hardware issue/poor placement of the sensor.

I really don't want to return my phone, but this issue is pretty bad.

I was having similar issues, but with another level of annoyance with the sensor. In addition to my cheek being able to press keys on keypad, yesterday I had a call drop and then randomly dial another number. Updated to 4.01 yesterday and was on phone this morning. Received a call - had the call drop, screen showed a Facetime Failure message - and then phone called a random number in my contact list. Called Apple again and they suggested a full Restore. Will see what happens.

The 'geniuses' at the Genius Bar have absolutely no more information or insider knowledge than your average guy on the street or press reporter does. They get no additional information fed to them through the company that is not already in the public domain. OS4.1 (not OS4.0.1) has been available for developers in beta format for at least a fortnight now, so there are plenty of people out there that can tell you what the current state of play is with that OS update.

If you are going to listen and believe what you hear from a 'genius' at the Genius Bar, you really are a sheep. An absolutely perfect customer in my opinion. If all customers did what they were told we wouldn't even need forums.

And for those of you that say "just return the phone", it really is not that easy. What are the other alternatives that have comparable features to the iPhone? NONE. Apple just needs to humble themselves and fix the issues as quickly as possible for their loyal customers. If a recall is necessary, then do it. Fixing these issues really need to be one of Apple's top priority.

Real word.
Apple are in business to make money and to act in the best interests of its shareholders.
No recall. The phone is not perfect and you have every right to return it. If you choose not to, that's your own personal choice. You have had ample time to test it and decide whether or not it operates in a manner you can live with.
The level of whinging that goes on on the forum is astonishing.
Backbone and balls, people. Use them.

This is NOT going to happen unless something like 25-50% of customers have the problem and after yesterday's earnings I would say that it doesn't look like it.

I actually sold my 3GS when I got my iP4 and then had to go and buy another one used to downgrade back to it. I hated to do it but Apple is not forcing us to keep these phones. Think about that before you assume they are just going to fix it tomorrow.

btw- not an Apple basher. I still have iPad 3g 64, 2 Macbook pros, iMac, etc etc.... Been an Apple fan for over 20 years. I just understand what is going on here and will expect a fix when it is here and working. Anything other than that is just speculation. Don't drive yourself crazy.

I'm on my 3rd iPhone 4 and they've all done it.

First one replaced at the genius bar because of the proximity sensor. They said nobody else had reported the problem to them.

Second phone also face dialed but more than that it's wi-fi was broken. I couldn't go more than 15 feet from my router without it totally losing wi-fi.

Third phone via applecare and I'm still face dialing. Please, please, please fix this. It's not even if I put it against my should it's when I'm hand holding it. It's got to be 90% of the calls I make are interrupted in this fashion.

Real world.
If you haven't experienced Proximity Sensor issues yet, will you soon.
Real world.

Believe it or not, the reality is that the issue is out there, yes in every single handset! ( some worst than others , that's why some people have not realised yet). I would like/wish/hope that this will be sorted out with a software update so I can finally buy the phone I've been so much looking forward to. The international release date is now confirmed for 30th July 2010. Just imagine, if this is an issue that software can not fix, will apple be releasing million more handsets out there with a problem that can not be fixed?

Yes , Yes and Yes . Does not matter what , Apple would release and sell the phone in all those countries . Those who do not like it may return it and apple still be happy with the release and with sales. NOBODY can stop apple selling iphone. Apple can NOT afford to lose so much revenue. And they simply would admit that phone is bad if they delay the release in other countries.
So apple NOT having any choice will sell it around the world regardless of all the proximity sensor Problem.

Even It is a problem with each and every unit and even it is not fixable with software Apple will still sell their phones and convince the world it is a minor issue only.

I have poor AT&T service in my office even though next to large windows. My iPhone 4 seemed to have more problems connecting than my 3GS. I thought it was the antenna. Then, when on the phone, the handsfree speaker came on a couple of times. I concluded that my connecting problems could be due to the proximity sensor hitting the mute button. After the Genius told me that they are working on a software fix and I would be covered by the warranty after the 30 day return period expired, and that I would just have to live with the problem, I decided to return my phone. I had sold my old 3GS so had to find another one. I love the 4 except for the reception/sensor problems and will buy another one when things get worked out. I expect there may be a hardware change somewhere along the way and that Apple will take the time to get it right. Remember the problems when the 27" iMac came out? They eventually fixed it but it took awhile. If you got the first batch on June 24, you only have a few days left to return it. Get over it; stuff happens. If they could have fixed it by now, they would have. They can still sell every one they can make and apparently most people don't have a problem. I am an Apple shareholder and appreciate their dilema. However, Apple always seems to get it right even if it takes awhile. My 3GS with iOS 4 will serve me fine until everything is worked out. Heck, maybe I'll wait for a Verizon phone which may be an even better solution to my poor AT&T coverage problems. If you want problems, just ask my about my Windows 7 nightmares. Windows 7 was NOT my idea.
