Mine is even worse today, this afternoon/evening... It doesn't even matter where you hold the phone, it will flicker and turn features on, hang-up, etc. I've been dropping calls all day too.

My boss told me to take the phone back, he's done dealing with it and so is everyone else I speak to.

Great, great product, except for the darn phone part... I'm really going to miss the retina display.

It's not a case. I have yet to get a case for my iPhone, and I have upgraded to 4.0.1 and just today I have muted 2 calls accidentally. I will be talking to someone and I guess they don't hear me and they hang up. I look at my phone and it is on mute. What the heck, fix this! Signal dropping, muting calls, etc...

I loved my previous iPhone, please don't ask me to return this for something I will hate.

Interesting Observation.

Okay, we have all been plagued by this problem for some time (for those who haven't, please move on) but I just realized something quite interesting. I have been closely watching how my screen turn on while on a call. I made the following observations:
1. The screen will turns off appropriately when I put the phone to my ear.
2. The screen will turn on without me changing the actual positioning of the handset against my face (keeping both still in relation to each other), though this seems to occur more rapidly if I change my entire body position in relation to my surroundings (again, with the phone to face placement unchanged).
3. *Once the screen comes on, it will not turn off again unless I pull the phone away from my face, then put it back.*

It is all was tested 3 weeks ago and it means nothing. It Must be a hardware problem and we will see if it ever works . Very Soon ,about august 10.

I've had two totally opposite and contradictory statements from Apple employees on this in the last 3 days.

Apple support (phone support) girl said this was a hardware fault and I should immediately return my phone to the nearest store for a replacement.

Guy in the store said it was a software fault, they were working on it and it would be fixed in the next release.

So what do you make of that?

In my case it no longer matters as the iPhone4 went back today for a refund. If they ever fix this mess, I'll consider parting with my cash again. But I'm not putting out £600 for a device with not one but several serious issues like this.

First ever Apple product I've returned. And I started with their stuff in the 80s with an Apple II, which incidentally I still have!
