i too had the proximity sensor issue. either would go black or just go crazy going to facetime or go mute. i was planning on exchanging at the apple store until i started searching around the web about this problem. yes did the reset thing and didn't do anything. and someone mentioned about the case. that did it! without the case, iphone worked like a charm. back on the case, went crazy again. still, it shouldn't be doing this. am hoping the software comes out real soon.

What's wrong with some of these Apple fans around here? If someone comes on to a 'support' forum saying that their iPhone 4 is the best, greatest, has no problems, the perfect phone, and basically are a BRAGGER.. the fans don't attack them. But, when another person comes on a 'support' forum stating their problems/gripes with a not-so-perfect, the fans attack them and call them whiners.

So, if people have praise for the phone around here, they're ok, but if they have complaints & problems, on a 'support' forum, they should shut up and return the phone! Got it! 😝

That said, I'm constantly frustrated by this Proximity Sensor problem. I found a few work arounds for the time being, and hopefully, it's a software issue to be resolved with the next update.

I ended up returning my iPhone 4 after a week of use. I miss it, but b/w the antenna issue and the proximity sensor, it was unusable for me. For me the proximity sensor problem was more annoying than the antenna problem. I muted on people, hung up etc almost every fifth call. I think it is a hardware problem. If it was a software issue, they would have fixed it by now. Just my 2 cents.

I returned my iPhone4 a few hours ago and am currently using my wife's old LG crap-phone. It broke my heart to return the iPhone. If everything worked it would be the best on the market. I have been a die-hard Apple fan since I started buying their products in the late 1980's, so I didn't take this decision lightly.

The proximity sensor issue was the main reason I returned it (and I was nearing the end of my 30-day return period), but I had other problems with the device that have been widely reported by users: yellow pictures and video indoors under artificial lighting, some bluetooth audio problems, etc.

And ever since moving from Verizon to AT&T, we've dropped so many more calls. I don't know if it's AT&T, the iPhone, or both, but it's gotten old. We may take a look at the new Android phone that AT&T has now, or we may just move to T-Mobile so that we can continue to use our old iPhone (sans 3G). Ugh.

If Apple fixes all the problems with the iPhone 4 before we make up our minds, I'll probably buy it again, but I hope they do it soon.

I finally went to the ATT store and reactivated my 3GS. So nice to have a reliable phone again. The ATT store gave me a new sim for my iphone 4 so I will not need to go back when they have the problem fixed. The assistant manager told me they had several iphones returned for a refund. He thought the problem of the sensor would be fixed shortly!
