No... he did not say THAT either. The actual quote is:
"We're tracking some problems with the proximity sensor, and we’re working on solutions, and we’ll try to get it fixed in the next software update".

Actually, this forum is where user's come to ask other user's questions. If you really want Apple to listen, you need to write Apple directly. There are moderator's who make sure we don't break the forum rules and they will delete offensive or inappropriate threads, but what you write here won't get where you hope it will.......

Got my iPhone 4 yesterday, using it without a case and am having ridiculous proximity sensor issues (my ear/cheek causes mute, video calls, ends calls, conference calls, etc.). Just got off the phone with Apple Care. Sam, the nice tech support guy, said that he was going to be "straight with me". He said this is a common issue, that Apple is aware of it, but there is no answer yet. Up to me what I want to do. Options:
1. Replacement - but it may take awhile to get a replacement phone at this point.
2. Take it back and get a refund.
3. Use the speaker, headset or earphones while I wait it out until Apple issues a fix.
He said Apple's official stance is that it's a software issue, but he admitted it could be hardware. He thought the software fix would be issued within a week or so, but still no official date.
As others have said, I LOVE the device, but I'm not convinced it's a software issue and without a real fix, the phone is so flawed as to be unusable. Think I'm going back to the 3GS - not quite as cool, but at least it's not a lemon.
