Time capsule backup - no mountable file systems

Recently, I had to reinstall the operating system on my macbook pro which meant all of the data on my mac was gone. When I went to reinstall my backup from my time capsule, my back-up showed up but said "No volumes found in back-up." Now, when I click on my backup in finder it says: "No mountable file systems." Anyone experienced this before and know what to do?

I'm not clear on how you tried to restore from the Time Machine backup of your Mac. It seems that a number of users try to use Time Machine to restore data, and this is not the correct way to restore to a Mac with a new operating system that has been installed.

If you reinstalled the operating system on your Mac, then you have in effect, a new Mac. When the Mac started up, Setup Assistant would normally ask you if you wanted to use a Time Machine backup to transfer data from the backup to the new Mac.

If you passed on using Setup Assistant when you first started up the Mac after reinstalling the operating system, you now have the option of using Migration Assistant to do the same thing.

Migration Assistant is located as follows on your Mac........Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant

More info on Migration Assistant can be found in this Apple Support document:

Open Airport Utility and click on the picture of the Time Capsule

A smaller window will appear with information about the Time Capsule

Look for the LAN IP address and jot that down

Close AirPort Utility

Click anywhere on the open desktop of the Mac so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen

Click the Go Menu

Click Connect to Server

Enter afp:// and the LAN IP address of the Time Capsule. For example, if the LAN IP address is 10.0.1.8, you would enter the following:

afp://10.0.1.8

Click Connect

You will be asked for the Time Capsule admin password

If a connection can be established, then try running Migration Assistant again

If still no luck, unfortunately, I suspect that the backups are likely corrupted. You will need to contact Apple Support directly for additional assistance since I cannot duplicate the issue that you are reporting

Where are the backups stored? On a USB drive connected directly to your Mac? On a Time Capsule? On another device?

If they are stored on a Time Capsule, you would not want to try to locate the backups using a wireless connection. Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the Time Capsule to your Mac. If your Mac does not have an Ethernet port, you will need to locate an Ethernet to Thunderbolt adapter.......(assuming your Mac has a Thunderbolt port).

If the backups are stored on a USB drive, try powering off both the Mac and USB drive to see if that helps. Does the USB drive show up on the Mac's desktop?

Yes, that's what I meant. While using setup assistant after reinstalling the OS, my backup displayed "No volumes found in backup." It's a long story, but my main problem is not being able to restore my backup now using migration assistant (which I have tried - gives the same response: no volumes...). How can I fix the "No mountable file system" error I get when viewing my backup in finder?
