Spotlight doesn't show any apps at all!

Is MacOS becoming as unreliable as Windows Vista?

I have a fresh install of the latest Mojave, and Applications doesn't show up in my spotlight search results, even though Applications is clearly checked in the System Preferences.

What gives? How do I reset this?

The first line gave me the following reply:

2019-08-07 22:43:55.103 mdutil[1236:171592] mdutil disabling Spotlight: / -> kMDConfigSearchLevelFSSearchOnly
	Indexing disabled.

Now searching for more info on that, I found the following page:

http://blog.shiraj.com/2014/01/terminal-commands-for-improving-spotlight-indexing-volume/

But the hostconfig file which that page tells me should be in the /etc folder isn't there on my machine.

EDIT: Tried the following now, which did spawn and the processes you mentioned... we'll see in the morning what the results are, I guess...

sudo mdutil -i on /
Password:
/:
	Indexing enabled.

name:Malwarebytes

name:News

name:"Master PDF Editor"

name:HandBrake

name:"Affinity Publisher"

These all get accurate hits with Spotlight on macOS 10.14.6 (18G87).

Though you shouldn't need too, have you drag and dropped your Macintosh HD drive icon onto the System Preferences : Spotlight : Privacy panel, and then quickly removed it from that panel to initiate indexing?

I know how it's supposed to work, that's why I made this topic.

I don't think your idea about the privacy panel will work, because as I already said, everything is indexed fine, except for applications. That's the only thing that doesn't show up on this Mac.

I already tried to disable and enable application results, but that did nothing. I need something else, or preferably, MacOS to "just work" (though that era is over).

Maybe its time to start over. From the Terminal, the following will erase the local Spotlight stores for your boot drive. Within a few seconds, there will be a scourge of mdworker processes and an mds_stores process busy at reindexing the drive.

sudo mdutil -E /

The following will allow you to monitor the mds_stores and various mdworker processes. When they end, your drive will be reindexed.

top -o cpu -O rsize -s 5 -n 20

Now, see if Spotlight will now honor your search for applications on this drive.
