My Iphone 7 display suddenly changed to having vertical white line at the top third and the bottom third with a clear space in the middle. This appears on all screen , all websites, all apps. What could cause this?

It sounds like a screen failure, but we can't diagnose that issue remotely.
You need to have your device inspected at an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider. After checking it out, they'll give you all the available options:--> Apple – Location Selector

I believe some of the diagnostics can be run remotely by calling in to AppleCare. Certainly early with the battery promotion, a lot of customers were doing that to avoid an extra trip to an Apple Store or AASP.
