I don't know about common, but what you describe is clearly a swelling battery. These are generally unsafe, where it would be advisable to not charge the battery and to limit use. They can catch on fire. Maybe get whatever data you can (archive and lock to iTunes) from it and turn it off.

It's out of warranty, for a phone that old the only thing Apple would do is offer a complete replacement service unless there's a slim chance it didn't damage anything else. But if it's separating the screen assembly from the case there's usually damage that can't be repaired. Not sure where you are, but for an iPhone 6s in the United States, the price is $299 plus tax from Apple. It can of course be different in other countries and/or if the replacement comes from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

I guess it will be. aphid repair, but I don't know for sure. Contact Apple, explain your issue, ask for the options.
