What is Classic Environment and why is it no longer supported for a reasonably new program?

I am trying to replace the Starry Night Backyard program onto my computer, but I get the disclaimer "You can't open the application "Starry Night Backyard 3.1" because the Classic environment is no longer supported. How can I fix this?

You’ll want to acquire Starry Night v6 or later, per:

Looks like Starry Night 8 is current:

The "Classic" environment in Mac OS X 10.0-10.5 allowed users to run old non-OS X applications via the installed Mac OS 9.1 System Folder.

Rosetta emulation ran PowerPC applications up to Mac OS X 10.6. I still have Mac OS X 10.6 Server in VMware in case I need to take a peek at the "newsgroups" with MT-NewsWatcher.

Currently in Mojave you can use emulators like SheepShaver to run Mac OS 9, Basilisk to run Mac OS 7.5.5 or Mini vMac to run System 6.0.8 or System 7.0.1, for example. I recently tried them all and they seemed astonishingly reliable. And fast.
