Screen recording - no sound

Since upgrading to Mojave I am no longer able to get audio when I make a recording directly off the screen (I can record Sound externally, ie. myself talking, but not “internally”. Ive tried all the settings, and I’m sure all the volume levels are fine. This happens whether it’s QuickTime or the new Mojave “screen grab” method: I also tried SoundFlower, which despite seemingly downloading correctly, neither picked up nor recorded sound either. Any suggestions? (I should add that the actual audio from the Mac is fine - it just won’t record). Thanks.

This is where one selects the audio source for a screen recording in Quicktime Player:

When you press the little down arrow, you will see the options. In my case, this is what I have (yours may vary):

To record using Soundflower (2ch), you have to also choose Soundflower (2ch) as the sound OUTput.

This has the disadvantage that you won't hear anything whilst recording (because no sound comes out of the speakers), but it will be recorded. Change the output back to the speakers and playback your recording.

Actually, there is a (relatively) easy way to be able to record computer sound only and hear it while recording.

You use the Audio MIDI Setup program (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and create a multi output device. Add both the default output and Soundflower (2ch) to this device. Then in the recording choose this as output and Soundflower (2ch) as input.

Please explain in detail what settings you are using. Are you doing screen recordings with Quicktime Player? With the Screenshots application?

In Quicktime Player, when you do File->New Screen Recording, there is a little down arrow next to the record button. That is how one chooses the audio source. By default it is set to None, so if you don’t change it you will record no audio.

Sorry if the above is obvious but sometimes the obvious things are missed.

Try this method to record your screen. You no longer have to rely on QuickTime in order to record screens.

  1. Press Command + Shift + 5 on your keyboard to bring up the screenshot toolbar.
  2. Click either Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. Your recording will begin immediately if you select Record Entire Screen.
  3. Select the portion of the screen you wish to record if you're only recording a part of it.
  4. Click Record on the screenshot and recording control bar.
  5. Press the Stop button in the Menu bar to stop the recording.
  6. Control-click, right-click, or two-finger-click on the recording that appears in the bottom-right corner of your screen.
  7. Use the contextual menu to choose where to save the screenshot, send it, show it in the Finder, delete it, or mark it up.

Adrian
