(1) how do I find out how many songs are in my iTunes Library?
I can see all of the songs. But, there is no count as to how many songs.
(2) I have 5 playlists. How do I do a side-by-side comparison to see what songs are where?
(3) Under the heading, Devices, MUSIC, what does the little dotted circle mean next to the checkmark?

To view your song count, while in Songs view, use iTunes' menu to do:
View > Show Status Bar
Right-click the name of a playlist in the side bar and use Open in New Window. Repeat as required.

As turingtest2 suggests, it sounds like you’re viewing iTunes full screen, and therefore unable to get to iTunes’ menu. If so, get out of full screen by bringing the cursor to the top of the screen and clicking the green circular button in the upper left.
That changes nothing.
