Apple Pencil Marking when not in Markup Mode

When I’m in files, if I’m using my Apple Pencil to get around and click on files, it often draws on the document even though I’m not in markup mode. The most annoying part of this is that I can’t erase it at all so it messes up my documents permanently! I can’t find any place where I can change this setting, and I want to know how to erase the marks.

I saw another post similar to this but linking to the generic “how to use your Apple Pencil” is not helpful at all, so don’t tell me just to go to that posting, I want a real solution.

Hello,

Apple Pencil is not meant to be used as a primary input device for navigating iPad. When using QuickLook to view a document in Files Apple Pencil will automatically open Markup. There are no settings to disable this feature. You will need to use your finger as a primary input device for navigating iPad. If this is not satisfactory then I suggest submitting feedback to Apple.

Maybe try opening the files in the associated App. Word if a Word file. Pages if a Pages file. Excel if an Excel file. Numbers if a Numbers File.

I understand that, but I often have issues with the iPad registering my touch, and the only way to guarantee it clicking is by using my Apple Pencil. I will send feedback to Apple about it, but it would be beneficial to find out how to erase it/revert a file to its original version.

I don't follow you here. I use my Apple Pencil as a navigation tool, even in files and have no such issues whatsoever. In fact, I use my pencil almost exclusively to navigate my iPad, including to open and read files.

So you’ve never had the issue when moving through photos and files and it drawing on your file? It happens to me often, and I’m unable to erase or undo it (it’s permanent immediately) - so obviously that’s what I’m trying to figure out how to get it to stop so I can continue to use my Apple Pencil to navigate.

Yeah I would be fine with that - as long as it entered markup and I was able to erase or undo when I make an accidental mark. All I do is click a file to see it and if I use my pencil, it writes and I can’t fix it

Oh wait. I don't use QuickLook, so perhaps I misspoke. When I open a file, I open it in Word or OneNote. So, I don't have the issue there. Since I don't use QuickLook, that may be why I can navigate my iPad with my Apple Pencil without issue.

Most of my files are image files or PDFs, and I’m not doing much with them except saving stuff and looking (the big stuff I do on my Mac) - I’m a graphic designer, so it’s a pain when I save a drawing as an image file and then it draws a line across something important.

No, I don't have any issues with the pencil marking up photos or files when navigating.

Very strange, whenever I am viewing a file in QuickLook and I touch the Apple Pencil to the display it will automatically enter Markup.

I’m not really sure what Quicklook is - I just use the files app to look through my iCloud Drive, and that’s when it happens. I don’t open the files in anything

That's likely why you have this when I don't. My files are all actual files, like Word. I don't use image files at all.
