Unknown mail feature

On my iPad Air 2019, running iOS 12.4.

As I was going through my gmail.i was scrolling through the left side preview pane, swiping some to be deleted and my hand was resting  on the side of the iPad (not sure if that triggered it) suddenly some of the mail in the preview pane became greyed out and was now sitting stocked ( 8 of them) in little notes pinned on the bottom of the email that was open. I tried tapping on them to open, but nothing happens, they just sit there.

I was about to get a screenshot when they just vanished. I can’t find the missing unread emails now. What is this feature and where did this mail go?

Hello,

This would be iPad’s feature for selecting multiple items. If you “pick up” and item, such as a mail message, then while holding that item with one finger you can select other items with another finger which will add those additional items to the stack of items you are ‘holding on to’. This stack can then be dropped onto another application, similar to how a traditional computer uses drag-and-drop. If this item stack stayed persistent on the screen then it sounds like the object stack was picked up but for some reason iPad did not release the stack whenever it was supposed it, thus causing iPad to experience a glitch.

This feature comes in handy whenever you need to ‘pick up’ multiple items. This works in just about every area of the iPad. Let’s say you want to drag and drop multiple photos onto a new Mail message, you can pick up multiple photos and without letting go of the display. You can then use another hand to open a new Mail message and drop the stack of photos onto the Mail message. It definitely helps increase productivity on the iPad!

Thank you for answering. I restarted my iPad. It’s a new iPad I haven’t used it in mail much.

I though it was some new feature. This little stack of notes was about the same size as the follow button at the top of this page, tilted on angle, with a blue badge that gave the number count of how many I’d stacked. It looked like something Apple would come up with.

Thanks for explaining and solving what it was. I’d never seen it before.

I tried to drag them back over to the left pane inbox but they were just stuck.

I was not able to replicate it. I’ll likely never see it again.

Sometimes the ipad does new things and I have no idea what I did. Went into a panic once when my keyboard split in two! A quick googling fixed it of course.

That sounds like a handy feature with “handy” being the key word. I can’t use that because I’m one handed - one arm is completely paralyzed.

Oh whattya know, I just did it by stretching my hand lol I selected two pics and dragged them while hitting the home button to open mail and sent to myself. If only I could do screenshots. I use my chin on the home button lol Took quite some practice to accomplish that feat,

WOW! I never knew about this!

Hello,

I can see where this would be a little difficult to use. I believe Assistive Touch can help aid you in this feature. While I cannot go into too much detail about Apple prerelease software, I’m sure you’ll enjoy Apple’s new one handed keyboard in this Fall’s iPadOS 13 release. Instead of the split keyboard you can squeeze down the keyboard to about the size it is on an iPhone and iPad puts the keyboard into a little floating window. Another thing that I think you might find beneficial is the new Accessibility Pointer feature Apple has announced as apart of this Fall’s iPadOS 13. While I cannot go into too much detail about this feature, as apart of the NDA I signed when I started testing the beta on one of my devices, I can comment on that I have a problem where my hands often shake which makes using an iPad challenging sometimes. I love how lightweight, powerful, and portable iPad Pro is but sometimes being accurate with my touchscreen taps can be difficult. With Apple’s Accessibility Pointer feature a user is able to connect a pointing device, like Magic Trackpad, into iPad in order to control an onscreen cursor. While I cannot comment about my own personal experience when using the beta, you can draw your own conclusion when I say that when I use a Macintosh I prefer to use Apple’s Magic Trackpad as it helps allow me to be more accurate when navigating around the system. I have a feeling you may find this beneficial when Apple releases iPadOS 13 this Fall.

Speaking of professional features of iPad, are you familiar with how iPad can run multiple applications at once on the screen? Since you were not familiar with drag-and-drop I wanted to mention this feature as it can, currently, allow a user to run up to 4 applications simultaneously on the iPad. Apple has announced that apart of this Fall’s iPadOS 13 that an iPad can have a limitless (to my knowledge) amount of floating windows on the iPad (which can be accessed in its own app switcher). These kinds of features help make the iPad such a powerful portable computer. When Apple released the first iPad Pro in 2015 I started to slowly shifting my computing over to the iPad Pro from my iMac. Now in 2019 I primarily use the iPad Pro 2017. I just really like how refined the iPad experience is. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions and I’ll do my best to help!

Use multitasking on iPad

Yes I believe you did mark one of my replies as “Helpful”. Much appreciated! Points aren’t too important to me but it is nice when I level up to be able to use newer features on these forums.

Thank you for all your assistance with this. You already read my mind on what I need to learn with the multitasking link you provided. I tried some of them before but gave up on it because I was doing it wrong. I really have not been using my iPad to its full potential. I’m on my older iPad 2 Air right now. I’ve not tried the iPad Pro. I’m gonna look into that. I’m very addicted to my iPads. I do use the video feature where you drag it around and I can leave a video running in the corner on pause. I use it as my kitchen tv. I have all the channels with my cable subscription in their app. It’s handy to watch the news on .

Does the iPad Pro have a bigger screen size? My newest iPad is 10.5 I think.

I look forward to what what IOS 13 brings!

Hello,

I can agree that there is a bit of a learning curve with learning how to multitask on iPad. Once you learn the ropes it is a powerful feature. There is nothing wrong with the iPad Air 2. It is still a very capable device. A buddy of mine still uses an iPad Air 2 and loves it. That being said I outgrew the iPad Air and needed something with a little more horsepower. The iPad Air 2 has a 9.7” display whereas today the iPad Air (3rd Generation) has a 10.5” display. The iPad Pro 2018 comes in both an 11” and 12.9” display. The iPad Air (3rd Generation) is a pretty great upgrade from the iPad Air 2. If you however wanted more performance then the iPad Pro is a phenomenal machine.

Benchmarks have shown that the iPad Pro out performs the entry level MacBook Pro. I occasionally will need to edit some video and I found that my iPad Pro rendered 4K video faster than my iMac. With the LumaFusion video editor you can plug in an external display into an iPad and the viewer window will move to the external display while keeping the media box and timeline on the iPad. It is an incredible workflow!

I love the picture-in-picture video window feature! I’m actually using it right now, My evening workflow when I answer questions on these forums is to have Safari and Notes side-by-side with a floating Mail window and a picture-in-picture window. With my iPad’s 12.9” display and the Smart Keyboard I feel like I have my favorite computing experience.

If I need a more traditional desk setup I sit my iPad Pro down on my desk with an external display. When I need a graphics tablet for graphics design I can lay it flat. When I need a computer to watch TV and read recipes off of in the kitchen I can fold up the Smart Keyboard in presentation mode. If I need a mobile computer iPad is thin and lightweight... and so on and so forth. I’m just a huge fan of the iPad Pro!

Here’s another fun tip I’ll leave you on. Are you familiar with iPad’s cursor “trackpad” mode? Anywhere you are using the on-screen keyboard on iPad if you take 2 fingers and press them down on the keyboard then the keyboard will turn into a trackpad which allows you to move your fingers around and give you more precise cursor positioning. It’s one of those features that when they introduced it I couldn’t live without it.

I have the iPad Air 3. I just got back on it. I don’t know why I keep going back to my old one. It still works good.

Yes I did know about the keyboard cursor thing, yet another thing I don’t use much, I need to get with the times!

I use a plate/picture frame stand thing to prop my iPad on for video /TV or recipe viewing,

i just watched a video on the iPad Pro 2018. I wonder what the next version will be like! Is there one coming out in the fall?

it looks expensive by the time you buy all the extras, but I can afford it I suppose.

So this extra keyboard thing you get , is that also a case or would you still need the smart case?

Also can you just get the keyboard later and a keyboard will be on screen to use like a regular iPad?

Im not sure how I’d handle the propping up part, having to position the case or keyboard to presentation mode with one hand, hence I use the plate stand. Like if I got the bigger one, I might drop it. The bigger screen size seems more ideal for tv viewing. I was considering getting a real tv for my kitchen , but this could be my tv instead.

On topic of that , how is it for Air playing to HomePods that are stereo paired? I see some macs just won’t. My iPads do. It would be nice to watch my movies on them and hear them on my HomePods. My tv app disallows Airplay altogether so I already know the tv channels won’t work, but iTunes movies from the Apple TV App should. That would be a determining factor on size choice for me.

Hello,

The smaller 9.7” display is a great size. I still have my old iPad (1st Generation) and while it is basically useless I still love to read off it as the size is much more comfortable than holding a 12.9” rectangle in bed.

It is funny you mention the plate holder. I used the exact same thing! About 6 months ago my Smart Keyboard quit working so I still needed something to prop my iPad up so I used a plate holder. I eventually became so fed up with the iPad being so large that it would often fall off it.

Since Apple does pre-announce products we won’t know for certain if a new iPad Pro will be introduced this Fall. I have a good feeling we will see one.

What is great about iPad Pro is that you don’t have to buy all of the accessories all at once.

With the 2015-2017 iPad Pro the Smart Keyboard was essentially just a keyboard folded up into a Smart Cover which did not provide rear protection for the iPad. For the 2018 iPad Pro the Smart Keyboard is now a folio case which protects both the front and rear of the iPad. The Smart Keyboard seems to be hit or miss for some people. Some people like the feeling of the keys while others do not. I personally feel like it’s the most comfortable keyboard I’ve ever used. I LOVE it. I encourage you to check one out in person in an Apple retail location.

With HomePod Stereo Pair the Apple Home applications will pair the two HomePod devices together as 1 AirPlay destination. Any Macintosh that supports broadcasting to an AirPlay 2 destination will work with HomePod Stereo Pair. I personally only have 1 HomePod so I have not tried the stereo pair yet. I’d love to try it out some times. HomePod sounds FANTASTIC for music. It’s one of the best sounding speakers I’ve ever used. It’s a tad quiet for movies. I find myself wishing it was louder when listening to movies. I can only assume that the HomePod Stereo Pair would solve this problem. I’d love if one day Apple did a 4 HomePod pairing. You could then put a HomePod in each of the 4 corners of a living room for full 3D surround sound. It would sound amazing! I can only dream...

Aug 12, 2019 9:56 AM in response to QuickPost

The HomePod stereo pair is much louder for movies. It’s pretty darn good sound. Stereo pair is the way to go for movies on Apple TV.

You probably could still use 4 homepods in one room. Using two pairs. I have 3 and can select to air play to all, except number 3 is in my bedroom.  It of course wouldn’t have the true theatre sound of front and back etc. I wonder how 4 (two pairs) in a room sounds though? My livingroom is quite large.

I do notice any time you’re air-playing to homepods, the volume is reduced. That’s why Apple TV isn’t as loud. For example if you just ask Siri to play music , it’s much louder than going through your iOS devices. Before I paired them I sometimes had the music at 100% to hear it further away. After the pairing, Siri would respond with “THAT’S VERY LOUD ARE YOU SURE.” . I’m like yes I’m sure and you don’t have to yell! OMG, I was like ok turn it down! I really wasn’t expecting them to be so much louder.

The 12.9 inch PRO sounds like it might be too heavy for me. I’m mostly looking to get a bigger iPad Screen , so an Air model would be nice if they bring one out, I can only lift so much with one hand.  My plate stand is heavy duty iron, and nothing falls off it.

I’m gonna see what Fall brings and decide what I want to get.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hello,

When I first set up my HomePod I had the cocky attitude that it wasn’t going to be that loud so I turned it all the way up and all the windows in the house were rattling! HomePod is a seriously impressive speaker!

I am not quite sure how heavy the 2018 iPad Pro is. I can say that the 2017 12.9” iPad Pro can get pretty heavy. I think the iPad Air (3rd Generation) is that sweet spot of big screen + portability.

I was using some old flimsy wooden plat stand. I do NOT recommend it! Ha

You are very welcome! As I mentioned before, if you ever have any questions about iPad feel free to reach out to me.
