disk utility crashing when attempting to partition usb thumb drive

I just upgraded to mohave and running 10.14.6 on an MBP pro 15" late 2013. I am using disk utility and changing a USB thumb drive from FAT32 to Mac OSX journaled in the pull down when attempting to partition the drive. The app immediately crashes. Any ideas how to partition my usb drive?

Try this. Click on "View" then "Show All Devices". Erase and reformat the device as MacOS Extended(Journaled) with a GUID Partition Map scheme. After you format the drive then you should be able to partition it.
