SOCKS Proxy

After a recent upgrade to Mojave, I ran into a problem where an error message referred me to System Preferences...don't recall the specific issue and message wording. Per the message, I went into the Network preference setting, to PROXIES where I saw that SOCKS proxy was checked...i'd not noticed it before, and had no connection issues til after upgrade to Mojave. Crossing my fingers and hoping, I unchecked the SOCKS proxy. My problem went away. But every time I shutdown, and then sign back in, the SOCKS proxy is back on. Two questions: do I need SOCKS proxy? If not, how do I stop the system from reselecting it after every shutdown/sign back on?
