Message open and alerting - Help turn it off

I received a text message, I opened it to read it, while I had it open, the sender responding and the text tone played again. How can I cut this feature off? If I have the message open, I don't need an alert when they respond.

You shouldn’t have to turn it off and there is no way to turn it off. As long as the Messages app is open and active and you are texting back and forth, you should not be hearing the text tone. Try force closing the Messages app, restart your phone and see if that behavior stops.
