If i delete an iCloud file on my desktop, will it also delete the file in iCloud?

Want to make space on hard drive. Managing disk space. iCloud files show up.

Can I safely delete these files on the desktop and still have them on iCloud or are they permanently deleted from the iCloud as well?

If you delete the files one place, they will be deleted everywhere that is syncing to iCloud.
