I have a unlocked iPhone X from sprint and it’s not supporting my old phone straight talk SIM card. Could it be the phone or do I have to purchase a new SIM card

Straight Talk offers support for both CDMA and GSM devices
If you have a GSM SIM from your Carrier then get a new SIM which supports CDMA
