create a bootable drive on external volume

Hello all.

Is this possible on Mojave? My purpose is to boot from this volume in order to do repair work and maintenance using third party programs. I have googled but can't seem to find anything for Mojave. There are examples of how to clone your hard drive, but I just want the basic system files to make a bootable drive.

Thanks in advance

Make sure your external drive is big enough and an external SSD would give you the best speed. Use Disk Utility to properly format your external drive for Mojave installation. Open Disk Utility. Click on "View", "Show All Devices". Select your main drive device, not the (indented) volume directly below it in the Disk Utility sidebar. Click on "Erase". You will get a dropdown window. First select, Scheme: GUID Partition Map. Then select Format: APFS. Click on the "Erase" button at the lower right of the dropdown window. Once Disk Utility is done, open the Mojave installer (if you have it it should be in the Application Folder). If you don't have the installer, download it from the App Store when it opens select your external drive as the destination for the Mojave install.

Remember that most Macs these days will have a recovery volume on the drive. The only time this won't help is if the drive itself is failing in which case probably none of your other tools will be of much use either. Most of those tools are directory rescue tools which will work from the recovery volume too if you have them installed there.

About macOS Recovery - https://support.apple.com/HT201314 - "OS X Lion and later include OS X Recovery. This feature includes all of the tools you need to reinstall OS X, repair your disk, and even restore from a Time Machine backup." - Also information about Internet recovery.

I came across that. But a couple of things from my perspective:

1) This seems to me to be a quicker way to install Mojave on multiple computers. I just want a straight out of the box boot drive. Should I just do the installer and install on the hard drive?

2. I am not comfortable and familiar around Terminal .

Thanks
