Setting up an iCloud.com email address

iCloud says I can't use iCloud mail until I set up an iCloud.com email address. So, I follow the directions and iCloud tells me I already have a primary iCloud email address, except I don't know what it is.

(I signed into iCloud using my Apple ID. Is that the "primary iCloud email address"?)

All of the directions I've followed on iCloud have led me nowhere, or in circles.

Thanks, Roger. My Apple ID is a non-Apple email address. I was having trouble getting to the System Preferences/Settings on my iPhone or on my Windows 10 PC with iCloud for Windows.

I deleted and re-installed iCloud for Windows, and then was able to set up the iCloud.com address.

[Next week I'm going to worry about the fact that Apple seems to have a 2nd Apple ID for me (another old non-Apple email address) that comes up in certain contexts.}

If your Apple ID is an @icloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com then that is your iCloud address. (The latter case would apply if you had been a member of iCloud's predeccesors, MobileMe and DotMac.)

If your ID is a non-Apple email address (don't post it here) then you enter it in System Preferences (or Settings)>iCloud, enable Mail there, and at the prompt choose an @icloud.com address.

The error message you quote suggests that my first sentence is your situation. If your ID is an @me.com or @mac.com address then you have an @icloud.com address with the same text before the '@'.
