backing up iPhone 6s on Mac

My daughter is getting a new iPhone XR and I need to back up her iPhone 6s on my MacBook into intunes. When I select the backup to my computer, the "back up now" button stays grey.

Try If your iTunes backup couldn't be completed or you can't restore from a backup - Apple Support. Launch iTunes, unlock the device before connecting to USB, and trust the computer if prompted. If iTunes asks to set up as new device or restore backup choose set up as new device.
