I want to make sure the library on my laptop is the same as my iPhone. They have slightly different content and I don't want to lose any of it. If I try to sync the entire music or video content, I am told it will wipe out what is on my iPhone. How can I combine the two?

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - Apple Community. Once everything is in the library, and ideally backed up, you can afford to overwrite the device.
