how to turn off two-factor authentication

How do I turn OFF two-factor authentication? This summer I have purchased a new iMac, iPhone Xr, iPad mini and Watch - all replacements. I must have turned this feature on when setting up my iPad or Watch, and now it's a pain in the behind! I have gone to appleid.apple.com to turn it OFF, and there does not seem to be an option to do so! UGH! Help!!

Thank you.

You'll need to use it every time you log into iCloud.com from a browser that you haven't trusted before. My experience is also that, even if you've trusted the browser but haven't used it in a while (I use Chrome on my Mac only every couple of months), you may have to use 2FA again.

You'll need to use it when you set up a new device.

It just seems pointless when I am signing into Apple on my iMac I have to enter a six digit cod sent to that very same computer in addition to my account name and password.

The thing that can be hard to get your head around is that 2FA is not intended to protect devices. It's purpose is to protect your Apple ID. Your device is, as you've noted, protected by your passcode.

I guess I will have to find some info and explanations about 2FA before it drives me crazy.

I really suggest you read Apple's support article:

Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support

Pay particular attention to the section on managing your trusted devices. I highly recommend you set up a landline or Google Voice number or family member's phone number as a trusted number.

Please come back with additional questions as they arise.

Anything you’re editing in your AppleID itself will require a code. So anything you’d edit or change at or from https://appleid.apple.com/ will require a 2FA code. So adding a new trusted device, removing one, editing your primary email or other contact info - all that will require an 2FA code.

Logging into an Apple service account from a web browser (select “trust this browser) or app should only require a code when you first do so, or if you haven’t used that web site or app for awhile.

The 2FA system is all about protecting access to the information in your AppleID (https://appleid.apple.com/), not your device’s per se, nor your web logins to Apple sites.

And note the option to register trusted telephone voice numbers or trusted SMS cellular telephone numbers as baxkups for codes - it is highly recommended to do so (Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support).

You’ve given me much to think about and absorb. Thank you so very much. I’m 67 and some days think I just don’t have the patience to deal with these things! But —- I did upgrade to four new devices this summer and they are are up and running well. Truly, this 2FA has frustrated and puzzled me. I appreciate your time and patience!

Many of the regulars here are older than you! At least one of them has about 20 years on you. So, don't let your age get in the way of learning new things if that's what you want to do.

2FA can be confusing, even to people with lots of technical experience. But, I'll give you the advice I give to anyone regarding technology. When you start to get frustrated, walk away if you can. It's really hard to learn when your angry at the *&^^%$ computer.

I have been using Apple products solely since 1987 when I bought my Mac Plus and Excel! I used to have others set up my new computers until about 1997 when I decided I needed to do it myself AND would therefore also have everything set up to my own specifications. I haven't asked many questions of this community but feel the "love" and realize I could use the support especially when frustrated. I am always curious about learning more! Stepping away when angry or frustrated is truly excellent advice!

I'm so happy you took my advice in the spirit in which it was intended! Hope to see you around some more. I bet you have a lot to offer the community if you decide you have the time and inclination.
