If you want to display on the iMac, not read its disk, you need Target Display Mode.

Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support

You need a Thunderbolt adapter and cable.

Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter - Apple

Apple Thunderbolt Cable (2.0 m) - White - Apple
